The legislature wrapped up business for the 2024 legislative session last weekend and is not scheduled to return until January 2025 unless the members are called back to deal with so-called unfinished items or to work through an emergency situation that requires legislative action. Bills that have passed both houses of the legislature (more than 800) will be sent to the Governor for signature or veto by the end of December. Bills that do not pass muster with the Governor this year will need to be re-introduced by sponsors in January and will get new bill numbers. In the meantime, members return to their districts this week to focus on primary elections looming at the end of this month. Every seat in the legislature is up for election this year (the second year of a two-year cycle), and many sitting members are facing primaries. Added to the mix, a number of long time Assembly members have announced their retirements, as has local Senator Neil Breslin in the Senate, leaving several open seats for this year’s election contests. Thus, in both houses there will likely be a substantial shuffling of committee chairmanships and leadership positions in the beginning of 2025. -- Park Strategies
