The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released its top ten most frequently cited federal health and safety violations for fiscal year (FY) 2023 and the top four entries relate to construction fall protection standards. Ranging from most cited to least, the top ten most cited violations were: General fall protection requirements - 7,271 citations Hazard communication violations - 3,213 citations Ladder safety requirements - 2,978 citations Scaffolding safety requirements - 2,859 citations Powered industrial truck/forklift safety requirements - 2,561citations Lockout/tagout requirements - 2,556 citations Respiratory protection requirements - 2,481 citations Fall protection training requirements - 2,112 citations Eye and face protection requirements - 2,074 citations Machine guarding safety requirements - 1,644 citations Each year, building sites account for about half of OSHA inspections, and at those workplaces falls are the most deadly hazard, accounting for 370 deaths in 2021, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. OSHA notes that the FY 2023 most frequently cited list mirrors those listed for FY 2022 and said that the only major change was that respiratory protection violations declined from third to seventh place.
