What’s New in Construction Technology

Our colleagues at the Association of Union Constructors offers the following insights regarding technology in construction.

Robots Won’t Take Our Jobs: Despite the debate on whether new technologies will take away jobs from workers, contractors have found construction technology has not replaced jobs, but made existing jobs safer and more efficient.

What to look out for. The following technologies are making a splash in the construction industry and are worth taking a look at:

·Prefabricated modular units: While this used to be a niche and rare practice, new technology has allowed for an easier application of prefabricated materials. This has proved not only to be safer in certain situations but also to be a time saver.

·Geolocation: For both theft prevention and equipment management, geolocation has helped maintain a more precise inventory of the equipment at the job site. All the locations can be tracked with a single software, simplifying the management process.

·Wearable Technology: A more up-and-coming technology for the job site is wearable technology aimed to keep construction workers safe. The main case made in favor of such technology is wearable technology would be able to alert workers when they are at risk of a heat injury during the summer months.

·AI: Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere nowadays. But that’s because it is simplifying processes that take days if done by hand by a single person. AI can now be used to plan a project, map out a digital twin, or even foresee any structural or financial problems in a project.

It’s time to decide. The construction industry is now at a turning point with dozens of technologies coming into existence, all with different applications during the construction and planning processes. Will you be an early adopter?
