Governor Kathy Hochul signed “Carlos’ Law” (A4947/S0621b) late last week, which relates to crimes involving the death or injury of a worker. This new law goes into effect January 22, 2023, and establishes higher fines for corporations that have committed such crimes. Fines can now be levied up to $1 million. Click here to read the bill. The Governor also vetoed two bills that ECA has been tracking: A5773/S2239 (in relation to equal pay disclosure with respect to state contracts and S8435/A8449 (would have required the reporting of certain data regarding the gender, race and ethnicity of their employees). ECA opposed both bills as we believed that they were duplicative of already existing law.
